There are songs that define a band's career, and then there are songs that completely change the scale of that career. For Hoobastank, The Reason was the latter. The California rock band had already built an audience with its heavier alternative-rock sound, but this emotionally direct power ballad turned them into an international mainstream act.
The Reason was released on January 26, 2004, as the second single from Hoobastank's second studio album, also titled The Reason. The album itself had arrived in December 2003, with the more aggressive Out of Control initially chosen as its first single. It was The Reason, however, that ultimately became the band's breakthrough.
The song grew out of an instrumental idea developed by guitarist Dan Estrin. After completing the music, Estrin sent the demo to vocalist Douglas Robb, who assembled the lyrics from ideas and fragments he had written previously. The result was a song built around remorse, personal growth and the realization that another person can become the motivation to change.
That straightforward emotional message helped The Reason travel well beyond Hoobastank's alternative-rock audience. The track topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and eventually climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, its highest position, on June 19, 2004. It was also the No. 6 song on Billboard's year-end Hot 100 for 2004, an indication of just how pervasive it was that year.
The international response was substantial as well. The Reason reached No. 1 in Canada, Italy, Bolivia and Ecuador, while peaking at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart on June 12, 2004.
On Vitrola Stereo's TOP15, The Reason reached No. 2 on September 25, 2004, remaining in that position for four consecutive weeks.
The song's success eventually earned Hoobastank two Grammy nominations in 2005: Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Two decades after its release, its popularity received another indication of its longevity when it surpassed one billion streams on Spotify in 2024.
The Reason became much bigger than the band that recorded it probably anticipated. Its relatively simple confession of regret and desire for change connected with a huge audience, turning Hoobastank's second album into a worldwide success and making this one of the most recognizable rock ballads of the early 2000s.
