There are songs that become hits, and there are songs that come to define an artist. For Patty Pravo, Pazza idea belongs firmly in the second category. The dramatic Italian ballad became one of the biggest successes of her career and a defining recording of 1970s Italian pop.
Released in April 1973 as a single and also included on the album of the same name, Pazza idea was written by Giovanni Ullu (music) and Paolo Dossena, Maurizio Monti and Cesare Gigli (lyrics). It was released by RCA Italiana after Pravo returned to the label following her period with Philips.
The story behind the song is particularly interesting. Ullu had originally submitted the composition to Pravo months earlier, with an English-language lyric and the title Follow Me, but she initially left it aside. When she returned to RCA, the project was revived, with the Italian lyrics created by Dossena, Monti and Gigli.
The song's emotional core is one of jealousy and unresolved desire. The narrator is with another man while imagining that she is still with her former lover. The title—"Pazza idea," or "Crazy Idea"—captures precisely that fantasy of mentally replacing one person with another. Pravo's performance, enhanced by vocal overdubbing, gives the chorus its sweeping, dramatic quality.
Italy embraced the song spectacularly. Pazza idea reached No. 1 on the Italian singles chart on August 25, 1973, remaining at the top for nine consecutive weeks. It finished as the second best-selling single in Italy for the year, behind only Il mio canto libero by Lucio Battisti.
The success extended beyond Italy. The single reached No. 17 in the Netherlands and No. 46 in Belgium, while versions in Spanish (Una locura), English (Crazy Idea) and German (Was für ein Tag) allowed Pravo to take the song into other markets.
The album Pazza idea was just as successful, spending six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Italian album chart. The record became the best-selling album of Pravo's career, cementing the importance of the song that gave it its name.
Pazza idea captures something particularly characteristic of great Italian pop: a highly dramatic emotional premise wrapped in an elegant, immediately memorable melody. Patty Pravo turned that combination into one of the defining recordings of her career—and into a song whose story continued through numerous international adaptations and covers.
