After making his name as the lead singer of R&B group Dru Hill, Sisqó launched his solo career with Unleash the Dragon, released in 1999. Following the explosive success of Thong Song, he delivered a very different kind of hit with Incomplete, a deeply emotional R&B ballad that became the biggest solo hit of his career.
Incomplete was released on June 13, 2000, as the third and final single from Unleash the Dragon. The song was written by Montell Jordan and Anthony "Shep" Crawford, with Crawford handling production. Unlike the provocative energy of Thong Song, Incomplete focuses on loneliness and emotional emptiness following the loss of a relationship.
Musically, the song is built around a restrained R&B arrangement that puts Sisqó's vocals at the center. His performance emphasizes vulnerability rather than the flamboyant persona associated with some of his earlier work, allowing the song's central idea—that life feels incomplete without someone you love—to carry the emotional weight.
The change in direction paid off commercially. Incomplete became Sisqó's only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, a position it reached on August 12, 2000 and where it remained for 2 weeks. In the UK, the song reached No. 13 on the Official Singles Chart on December 16, 2000.
Incomplete showed another side of Sisqó. After the flamboyant success of Thong Song, he demonstrated that he could also deliver a traditional, emotionally powerful R&B ballad. Its success gave him his only Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and remains one of the defining achievements of his solo career.
Incomplete is an interesting counterpoint to Thong Song. The same artist who had dominated pop culture with one of 2000's most provocative hits followed it with an intensely sentimental ballad—and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the process. It remains Sisqó's biggest solo chart achievement.
