Easier Said Than Done — The Essex (1963)

Few debut singles have made an impact as immediate as Easier Said Than Done. Released in May 1963 by The Essex, the song quickly climbed the charts and turned the little-known vocal group into one of the year's biggest success stories.
What made The Essex unique was their background. Formed by members of the U.S. Marine Corps while stationed in North Carolina, the group recorded the song during military leave. Their clean harmonies and upbeat sound reflected the popular vocal group style of the early 1960s, just before the British Invasion transformed the landscape of popular music.

Written by William Linton and Larry Huff, Easier Said Than Done is built around a simple but universal idea: offering advice about love is always easier than living through it. Its catchy melody, handclaps, and infectious chorus gave the song an irresistible charm, while the addition of female vocalist Anita Humes added warmth and balance to the group's harmonies.

Commercially, the single became one of the biggest hits of the summer of 1963, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on July 6, 1963, where it remained for two consecutive weeks. It also topped the Billboard R&B Singles chart, making The Essex one of the few military groups ever to achieve such commercial success.

Although the group never matched the success of Easier Said Than Done, the song has endured as a classic of the pre-Beatles pop era. It captures a moment when vocal harmony groups dominated American radio and serves as a reminder of the rich musical landscape that existed just before rock music entered a new chapter.

Easier Said Than Done is more than a catchy pop tune—it represents the closing years of one musical era before another began.

Its success demonstrated that great songs can emerge from the most unexpected places, including a group of active-duty Marines with a shared love of music. More than sixty years later, its melody and timeless message continue to make it one of the standout hits of 1963.

Some chart-toppers fade with time. Easier Said Than Done remains memorable because its message has never lost its truth: giving advice about love is simple—living it is the hard part.
