Kesha's Camp Speaks Out on Dr. Luke Abuse Allegations

By Colin Stutz | Following the news Tuesday of Kesha's lawsuit against her longtime producer Dr. Luke for alleged emotional and sexual assault, the pop star's lawyer says his client wants to get Dr. Luke out of her life for good.

"Only after extensive therapy and rehab has she finally gotten to the point where she's strong enough to extricate herself from him," Kesha's lawyer Mark Geragos tells Billboard, referring to Dr. Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald.

According to Geragos, the alleged abuse had been going on for years but only now does the 27-year-old singer feel ready to take legal action. The suffering had brought her to the brink of death, he adds, describing Dr. Luke as a predator.

Geragos continues, painting a grim image of Gottwald and the music business as a whole, saying, "What you have to understand about him is,  he thinks that because he's got more money than he knows what to do with, that he can take these young impressionable artists and destroy them."

Gottwald's camp issued its own statements in retaliation, with his lawyer, Christine Lepera, telling Billboard she believes Kesha's filing is "nothing more than a continuation of her bad and offensive acts." They have filed their own defamation lawsuit against Kesha, her mother Pebe and her reps at Vector Management.

Geragos' reponse to Dr. Luke's suit: "He defaulted to form as an abuser; his immediate reaction is to not just to sue her but sue her mother and Jack Rovner, the only two people who protect her."

"Kesha and her mother are engaged in a campaign of publishing outrageous and untrue statements about Dr. Luke to third parties, including scurrilous and false statements of purported physical and mental abuse of Kesha," Lepera said in a statement. "The complaint explains that Kesha and her mother Pebe have wielded these defamatory statements in an attempt to extort Gottwald into releasing Kesha from her exclusive recording agreement with Dr. Luke."
