It was released on July 29, 2016, as the third single from the second extended play (EP) by The Chainsmokers Collage (2016). "Closer" became both the Chainsmokers' and Halsey's first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 3, 2016, a position it held for 12 weeks. In the UK it also reached the number one spot on the Official Chart on September 8, 2016, holding the top for 4 weeks.
